Neon was turned on earlier this week at Springfield’s Mars Theatre, as the renovated venue is prepared for its April 25 grand opening.
Workers installed carpet and stage flooring today, as well as chain barricades at the street in front of the theater.
City Manager Brett Bennett said lighting and movie projection and sound equipment were tested last night. The performance sound system will be tested early next week.
Additional seats will be installed on Tuesday, he said, making a total of 220 seats.
A ribbon will be cut at 6:45 p.m. on opening night, Friday, April 25. A progressive bluegrass band, The Greencards, is scheduled to play at 8 p.m.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be the first movie shown in the renovated theater, on Friday, May 2, the same day the movie debuts in theaters nationwide.
The last time a movie was shown in the building was 57 years ago, in 1957. Volunteers and city staff have been working on the theater’s renovation for 10 years.
